I Am Not My Brother's Keeper....Though I Sure Would Like To Be

This weekend my family went to visit my parents. My father turned 60 on Friday, so my mother put together a small gathering of family and friends to celebrate. My father, or Daddy as I call him, is a very difficult man to please. He doesn't like a bunch of hub-bub about him, so just a nice get-together was good for him.

My brother came down to visit as well. I do not get to see him very often. He is a general manager of a restaurant in Lima, Ohio. I haven't seen him since Christmas. My son hasn't, either, and he adores his one and only uncle. Both were very excited to see each other....or so I thought.

My brother arrived shortly after we did, and he got to hang out with the little one for about an hour before the little one had to be shuffled off to bed. He promised my son that they would go to the zoo tomorrow together. My little one was so psyched for this. He kept talking about it in bed, so much so that I had to quiet him in order to attempt him to get some sleep.

Little did I know that my brother's word is absolutely worthless. After everyone went to bed at about 11:15, my brother went out with his high school buddies. I know what you're thinking: of course he wanted to hang with them. I don't begrudge him this, but he DID just see them a few weekends ago and hasn't seen his nephew yet this YEAR. He knew we were getting up early to go to the zoo, but he went out drinking anyway. This wouldn't have been a problem if he had been responsible about time. We have no idea what time he got home, but my father was up at 1:45 to use the restroom, and my bro was not yet in. He must have been quite tired when he finally did come home because he was found in bed with his nice collared shirt and dress pants still on.

We were supposed to be at the zoo at 9, but because my brother was still sleeping, we waited. At 10, we sent the little one to go wake him up. My son was so cute and excited. He ran into the room, jumped on my brother and yelled, "Uncle ___! Want to go to the zoo?" My brother decided to stay home and sleep. That's right. Instead of getting his lazy ass out of bed, he chose to stay in bed and sleep. Oh, did I mention that he had a wedding to go Saturday night, so he wouldn't be able to spend time with my son that night, either?

So what makes an uncle? Genetics? Or the desire to spend more than an hour every 5 months with your nephew? I am so hurt right now I cannot even see straight. Where the hell are my brother's priorities??????
