Politeness

I'm not sure if that's even a word, but it is now if it wasn't before. Politeness is not something we commonly see in today's society, especially from teens and preteens. They seem to think the world is theirs and it owes them something, and all us adults should bow down on our hands and knees and thank them for allowing us to occupy their space.

I was witness to preteen politeness yesterday, and I was pleasantly shocked.

I was in a gas station buying some apple juice for my son since I had forgotten to bring some from home. There was a long line of people waiting, and a young black boy of about 10 or 11 got into a different line. At the time he stepped up, there was an attendant there, but she was just restocking the lottery tickets. He just stood there quietly and patiently waiting his turn. I thought to myself "I'm going to let him go in front of me." Well, I didn't get the chance, because the young man in front of me (he was about 25, why do I call him young like I'm ancient at 30? Whatever. I digress) told him that he could cut in front of him. The young preteen says "Thank you." He then looks at me and the other three people in line behind me and says, "if that's okay with all of you." WHAT?! WOW!

25 year old guy and I lock eyes and just smile and shrug. I kind of laugh and say, "Polite young man. You don't see that very often." 25 year old guy smiles and nods his head in agreement.

I smiled the rest of the day because of that little guy. There is hope for our young ones.
